Frequently Asked Questions

What does FRSITO do?

FRSITO is the Standard Setting Body for the Fire and Rescue Services industry. As an Industry Training Organisation (ITO) we:

  • set national unit standards and qualifications to be registered on the NZQA National Qualifications Framework (NQF)
  • develop arrangements for the delivery of training, both on job and off job
  • develop arrangements for monitoring training and assessment of trainees, both on job and off job

We work with industry representatives to develop the unit standards, qualifications, and training requirements, to make sure they meet the needs of the industry.

What is the realtionship between FRSITO and the fire and rescue services industry?

While FRSITO works closely with representatives of all sectors of the industry, it is not part of or aligned to any particular sector or organisation. It is an independent organisation with a Board and represents all aspects of the industry.

What is the National Qualifications Framework (NQF)?

The framework is administered by NZQA and is made up of nationally recognised unit standards and qualifications. It is the basis for life long learning, both on and off the job, and has eight levels - 1 to 8.

Why has my unit standard not been recorded?

FRSITO receives notification of unit standards that have been assessed on the job and records these and sends the details to NZQA. FRSITO may also receive notification of unit standards that have been achieved through off job training, and will record these and send to NZQA. However some training organisations, such as Polytechnics and Private Training Establishments (PTE), may send results directly to NZQA. If this is the case FRSITO must rely on those training providers to send the information to NZQA in a timely manner. FRSITO does monitor the recording of this information and works with training providers to help improve the timeframes.

How do I get started on a qualification?

Your first step should be to discuss this with your employer or your host organisation in the case of a volunteer. You can also contact your Regional Training Coordinator who will be happy to discuss what is needed with you and your employer or host organisation.
